We tore ourselves away from KL’s traffic (every hour is rush hour), heat (sauna! free!) and food (lunch time is all the time) to visit the Butterfly Garden and the Bird Garden (with monkey)

Left KL for Penang via a six hour but comfortable bus ride. Stayed in Bayview hotel, dining at rooftop revolving restaurant. Malays, Chinese, Indians living in cheerful harmony surrounded by restored colonial architecture like the E&O hotel.

Dragon boat festival: it’s a major event at a lovely lake and the long bus ride was a good island tour. Dinner was at a local food stall.

Took a flight to this heavily Islamic town in eastern Malaysia to see traditional Malaysian culture. Thank God for the Chinese! Allah Akbar. Below is the most revolting market on earth. The Renaissance hotel had a fab pool. Allah Akbar.
